You Asked: Are Advanced Placement Tests Happening in May?

You have questions—we have the answers.

With Advanced Placement courses a core part of many student’s college application plans, we understand the concern about the administration of AP tests and how students can perform in spite of the present circumstances.

Note: We have updated our original post to reflect the new information released by the College Board on April 3.
The College Board is pushing ahead with administering advanced placement exams and projects, but students will see substantial changes for this year’s exams.
  • No in-person exams will be administered this year.
  • The College Board is developing new at-home test options to administer the exams.
  • Exams will be offered to students on many major technology platforms (computer and mobile). If a student does not have access to one of these platforms, the College Board will also accept a photo of the student’s hand-written work that is uploaded on a phone or computer.
  • Students will have to pick and register one device to submit their exam responses.
  • Students will need to become familiar with the new platform ahead of the exam to ensure they know how to access their exam questions and can upload their answer(s) in a timely manner.
  • Most exams will be 45 minutes long and made up of one or two free-response or essay questions. Exams will not have a multiple-choice section this year.
  • The exams will only cover material that should have been covered by mid-March. The College Board is making many resources available online for students to continue their studies independently.
  • Each exam will be offered in May, roughly a week later than originally planned. Makeup dates will be available in the first week of June for students who receive approval from their school coordinator.
  • Students can cancel an exam registration at any time before the test for a refund.
  • Art Portfolios, Computer Science, and other projects/portfolio submission dates have been pushed back to May 26.

What Can You Do?

The tests will occur in mid-May, so start preparing now. Access the practice questions that are being posted in your AP course account online. Refresh your understanding of the over-arching concepts and principles that your class is built upon. If your school is not offering distance learning, consider setting up sessions to review notes with your classmates.
